Mill Bay House

This is a retirement home for an artist and her partner. Set on a hill overlooking the picturesque Mill Bay in the Far North, the site enjoys extensive of Manganui Harbour, to the east, and Pah Hill, to the north.

Neighbours also have sight of the house, so ‘hit-and-miss’ boarding was used to soften its impact and also to give privacy for the ensuite, while still being able to enjoy water views.

The brief was an ope-plan layout, with gallery space to display artworks. The scheme included an art studio, which is connected to the main house by a north-facing, covered fire porch; the porch being on the northeast corner, enjoying extensive views.
